The Diefenbunker was designated a National Historic Site in 1994, due to its significance as Canada’s most important Cold War history site, and its unique construction. When the Department of National Defense decommissioned Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Carp in the same year, the building was stripped of its furnishings, machinery, and all moveable objects. The empty building was then sold to the Township of West Carleton.
